Hill Learning Teacher Training

Rhombus Learning, in collaboration with The Farthest Pixel, partnered with Hill Learning to develop three certification courses for educators focused on phonological awareness and phonics. Designed to equip K-12 teachers with practical, research-based strategies, each course features interactive learning components that actively engage participants and provide immediate, formative feedback to reinforce key concepts.

In this first example, teachers explore how to teach syllable-level skills. The interactive module introduces various types of syllable-level instruction and models effective teaching practices. Participants begin by experiencing the module from the student perspective—learning how to identify and manipulate syllables—before transitioning into the teacher role. In the final activity, they are presented with fictional student responses and must evaluate each one, applying what they’ve learned to assess accuracy and identify instructional next steps.

In this second example, the focus shifts to phonemes and the role of articulation in sound production. Teachers engage with an interactive chart where hovering over icons in the top row reveals diagrams illustrating the place of articulation for each phoneme. Hovering over the video icons in the second row displays close-up footage of a teacher demonstrating correct pronunciation, allowing participants to make connections between visual cues and sound formation.

Together, these modules provide a robust, hands-on learning experience that bridges theory and practice, supporting teachers in confidently applying foundational literacy skills in their classrooms.
